STOP: It’s Time to Hit the Brakes and Refocus!
Last weekend, I made a radical decision: my girlfriend was away at Miami, so I seized the chance to hit the brakes and reevaluate everything. Business projects, personal goals, business negotiations, startup coaching, friends, tech adventures, BrainInvest events… I pulled out my calendar, pushed what’s important to next week, and canceled everything else.
Why? It had been a month since I’d done any exercise… My schedule was all over the place, and I was losing focus.
And focus? It’s essential. For performance. For happiness. For yourself. And for others.
I - When Starting a Project
This reminds me of all those fresh-out-of-school entrepreneurs I meet regularly in France or Hong Kong. They bring me THE idea, the one that’s going to change the world. But often, these ideas are way too complex, with five business plans mashed together, confusing synergies, and an execution plan that looks impossible.
But here’s the thing: a good project, before it becomes a company, is first and foremost a clear pain, an obvious need, and a simple solution.
An entrepreneur? It’s someone who takes the complex and makes it simple.
So, I always ask them the same questions: What’s the biggest pain point in your market? What’s the easiest thing to monetize?
Start with that. Focus on that, and the rest will come later. Solve one problem at a time. A business exists to solve one problem. Not two. (Really, just one!)
By the way, if you're launching your first project, you’ll find tons of accessible resources in the Founder Box (here) !
II - Developing Your Project
So, you’ve launched your company and found your Go-To-Market strategy (congratulations, that’s no small feat !). Now’s the time to stay focused.
Launching a product is great, but it’s not enough. The next phase is growth, and that rests on two things: a product that improves and simplifies (yes, simplifies!), and a structured, well-designed commercial process. Think of it like a supply chain — it’s engineering, not guesswork (yes, I mean not guesswork 😉).
Even when things start to run smoothly, focus remains key. And keeping an ear to the market is crucial too. This is why I encourage entrepreneurs I work with to define their key success factors and delegate roles in a sustainable way. The commercial lead sticks to commercial; the CTO sticks to tech… No mixing things up!
Focus!
III - In Your Investments
Investing requires focus too — try spreading yourself too thin, and chaos is guaranteed!
In fact, I have a strict rule here: no direct investments (except personal entrepreneurial ones) — always go through funds. Why? Because each financial product has layers of complexity. You can’t be an expert at everything, so delegate the management and focus on allocation.
Who convinced me of this? IROKO, one of my favorite REITs. Their performance is remarkable — they’ve managed to grow through a bear market with a strong international approach. I love it! Their secret? They’re focused on their core mission: buying well and renting well. Nobody could do it better than them — except, well, them!
By the way, if you’re interested in investing in IROKO, I might be able to hook you up with a referral link — just let me know
Sometimes, the best way to speed up is to slow down. This weekend of refocusing gave me back my energy and clarity: getting back to the essentials, balancing fitness, work I love, and quality time with friends. It’s amazing what a little reset can do!
